The Making of the Cube originates in a longstanding fascination with minerals and, in particular, the apparently perfect cubic structures found in nature. How does nature produce a cube?

In 2017, this enquiry moved into physical matter through a collaboration with sculptor Andrea Zucchini. Four identical cubes, each measuring 8 × 8 × 8 cm, were cast in bronze, iron, lead and aluminium — materials with radically different densities, weights, textures and surfaces.

Four cubes were cast in each material. Although their dimensions and material are repeated, each was finished differently: some were cut back to the cubic form and left raw, while others were polished to varying degrees. No two surfaces are identical. Traditional casting introduces another condition: imperfections, traces and chance occurrences remain visible within an apparently perfect geometric form.
