Rhythm Series began in 2004, at the point when letterpress became central to my practice and I made a deliberate decision to work solely with the square as a fundamental unit.

Through printing, repetition, rotation and overlap, simple grids generate rhythm, density, movement and moiré. Their intersections produce visual information that does not exist within any single layer, allowing complexity to emerge from an extremely limited vocabulary.

The series also marked an early recognition that the digital was not necessarily separate from the analogue. Repetition, units, sequences and the construction of complexity from simple elements were already present within the physical process of printing and within optical perception. The analogue revealed a digital condition that, in a sense, had always been there.
