Chaos developed from photographs taken in Shanghai in 2006, where dense networks of overhead cables appeared as improvised drawings across the city.

Returning to London and the RCA, I translated this observed complexity into a simple modular letterpress form. Rather than printing from type, I used leading – normally the negative space between lines of type – raising it to type height so that the space itself became the printing surface.

A single form was then rotated and repeated through different configurations. From one controlled unit, increasingly complex structures emerged: grid becoming interference, order producing chaos.
