Ephemera developed from an ongoing collection of discarded metal fragments gathered while walking over many years. Bent wire, springs and other small remnants are noticed on pavements and streets, picked up and kept rather than passed by.

Each fragment carries the effects of use, gravity, weather and chance. Nothing is reshaped. The objects are given new life by placing them on small cubes individually cast from moulds using concrete, ciment fondu and plaster – materials and forms associated with the construction of the urban environment in which they were found.

The repeated cube acts as a building block: a common structure supporting something singular. Removed from their original function and brought into relation, the discarded fragments become lines, gestures and temporary structures.

The work extends the practice of attention from photography into collecting and making. Walking becomes a way of finding; what might ordinarily disappear becomes the beginning of another form.
