Skyline was developed as a curtain textile for Kvadrat between 2008 and 2010, continuing an investigation that began with photographs of Shanghai at night in 2006 and was subsequently translated into a series of letterpress works. The curtain became another transformation of the same visual language: illuminated buildings dissolving into fields of colour, light and vertical structure.

Rather than being printed, the image is constructed through weaving. Individual vertical threads of coloured yarn build the skyline line by line against a pale ground. Fluorescent and highly saturated colours intensify the surface, while light becomes caught within the structure of the weave, giving the textile an unexpected luminosity.

From a distance, Skyline can appear almost like a printed image. Moving closer reveals its material construction: thread, repetition and structure replacing the apparent image. Perception shifts with distance, light and point of view.
