Lines began in 2020 as an exploration of positive and negative space using 24pt letterpress ornaments. Each modular square consists of five lines which, through repetition and overlap, begin to generate structures beyond the individual printed unit.

When two layers intersect, moiré, depth and apparent volume emerge. A flat arrangement of lines begins to suggest a three-dimensional space – the square becoming a cube through optical perception rather than physical construction.

The work continues an enquiry into the relationship between analogue and digital: how repetition, modularity and interference within a physical printing process can produce spatial conditions more commonly associated with the digital image.
