Unit explores the smallest element from which a larger image or structure can emerge.
In the studio, geometric letterpress ornaments become modular units. Repeated, rotated and combined, they accumulate into fields, patterns and images. Outside the studio, similar relationships appear within the built environment: a square, opening, mark or fragment becoming momentarily distinct from the system around it.
Moving between printmaking and photography, Unit considers the relationship between part and whole – how a single element can retain its identity while contributing to something larger.
